Mandatory Psychological Evaluation Entry
Lai Ren
It is in pushing oneself to take chances that one can overcome grief, it seems, and it is trusting another person with your heart that one can believe in both healing and forgiveness.
That might sound cliché, but for once I don't feel a pressing darkness lurking in these weekly entries. Maybe even someone like me can move forward after A Block.

Station Log
I attended the memorial ceremony on the first anniversary of the tragedy of A Block with Lai Ren. The next day, as promised, Lai Ren waited in the Planetarium after the dinner shift ended and I rushed over from a long day of meetings. When I entered the cafe, all closed-down and dimmed for the night, my partner's slender form cast a lonely shadow against the window shade covering the gigantic world view.
"I still don't understand how you can work here and not see it," I said as I approached.
Lai Ren tilted their head in my direction but did not turn around. "It's easy to tune it out while at work."
I knew what they were referring to. The forest, my beloved wilderness, signifying all the memories of Rachel, whom Lai Ren had followed up here. Several weeks into our relationship, Lai Ren finally shared with me the story of their falling in love, and the subsequent loss of that love in the explosion on A Block. The expansive green on our home planet below was not a home for my partner, but a reminder of loss, both on Earth and in space. It was no wonder Lai Ren had trouble looking out the window of the Planetarium, and difficulty accepting the meaning of my name.
"Come here," I said.
Lai Ren shrunk into themselves, as if they could disappear rather than face this obstacle. I moved to them, wrapping my arms around their slender back and stretching to peer above their shoulder. I reached past them toward the button that would lift the shade, unable to reach it due to the beautiful human in my arms.
Lai Ren chuckled at my struggle. I smiled, relieved I could loosen them up a little bit.
"Ready?" I said.
"No," Lai Ren answered, but in response, they pushed the button.
The shade rose, and we looked out upon the forest below.
